The Game of Love: Special collaboration with Mora Play

At Suarez, we understand Valentine's Day as a celebration of bonds built with care, intention, and time. Every gesture, every detail, and every choice is part of a journey that unfolds one step at a time.

This year, our campaign The Game of Love finds its perfect symbol in chess: a game of strategy, complicity and balance that reflects the beauty of what lasts.

Within this universe, a very special gift is born for our most select clients: a handcrafted chess set created in collaboration with Mora Play, a company that, like Suarez, is distinguished by its deep roots in tradition and an absolute commitment to craftsmanship and know-how.

Mora Play, the brand that inherited the original Casa Mora, has kept alive the tradition of woodturning in Sant Pere de Torelló since the mid-20th century, and is today the only manufacturer of chess pieces in Spain with entirely local production.

Each piece is hand-turned from boxwood, following techniques that have been passed down for generations and that showcase the uniqueness that only craftsmanship can offer.

Their highly specialized team combines the experience inherited from old masters with the energy of a renewed project, taking care of every detail from the selection of the wood to the final finish of each piece.

Our chess set has been conceived as an exclusive collection: the pieces follow the Staunton standard with unique features from Mora Play, most notably the knight, while the board and case have been designed specifically for this collaboration, using carefully selected materials and meticulously crafted finishes. Every detail, from the placement of the felt on the base to the smooth feel of the pieces, reflects a respect for the craftsmanship and quality that characterizes both companies.

We spoke with Anna Bassaganya, director and current owner of Mora Play, about the process and philosophy behind this collaboration:

What remains of the Mora Play tradition today?
Although some processes have been modernized, we continue to champion the handmade and the unique. Each piece strives for perfection, yet retains unique details that speak of the hands that crafted it. Mora Play's family history and love for wood remain present in everything we do.

What makes boxwood so special?
It's hard, with minimal porosity and an ideal natural color. Its weight ensures stability on the board, and its imperfections require us to carefully inspect each piece, making industrial production impossible. Each log tells its own story and adds uniqueness to every game.

What was the process of creating this exclusive chess set for Suarez like?
We proposed a folding chess set with pieces from our catalog and collaborated on the design of the board and the case, which were unique to this project. It was a smooth and respectful process at every stage, from the selection of the wood to the final finish.

What differentiates this chess set from others you manufacture?
The board and packaging are entirely exclusive, while the pieces follow the Staunton standard with our own unique features, especially the knight, which is a design of our own. Each game reflects our tradition and our fresh perspective.

What do you hope those who receive it will feel?
Surprise, gratitude, and a sense of quality and beauty when touching and placing the pieces. And, while playing, enjoying a shared and meaningful moment that lasts beyond the instant of receiving it.

This very special collaboration embodies the spirit of The Game of Love: giving gifts that transcend the material, created with passion, time, and dedication. This Valentine's Day, at Suarez, the game is played with craftsmanship, emotion, and unique pieces, destined to occupy a central place in the lives of those who receive them.

Every detail invites you to pause, to appreciate the delicacy of the handcrafted work, and to enjoy the game as an expression of balance, precision, and care. In every movement, as in each of our jewels, you can perceive the dedication, craftsmanship, and expertise that make it possible.
